Key Takeaways from Tour of Seattle Waterfront Park

Friends of the Grand Connection steering committee members recently participated in a discovery tour of the new Waterfront Park in Seattle. Hosted by Joy Shigaki, President and CEO of Friends of Waterfront Park, steering committee members were interested in identifying lessons learned from the project that might apply to the development and construction of Bellevue's Grand Connection Crossing.

The Grand Connection Crossing is a linear park and dedicated bike/pedestrian corridor that will cross I-405 and connect downtown Bellevue with the Wilburton District and the Eastrail.Key takeaways for a successful project included having a bold vision, co-creating the project with community, being persistent and creating a place where everyone feels welcome. The Waterfront Park tour follows a steering committee visit to the Highline in New York City.

Additional site visits are planned to help identify lessons learned from other projects and apply them to the construction of the Grand Connection Crossing.

Friends of the Grand Connection is a grass-roots group of community members, businesses and organizational partners who came together in 2023 to support the development of a landmark bike/pedestrian bridge and linear park from downtown Bellevue, across I-405, to the Wilburton District and Eastrail. The Grand Connection Crossing, targeted for completion in late 2029, will provide the only I-405 crossing in Bellevue dedicated for use by pedestrians and cyclists, vastly increasing safety and improving the mobility experience of residents and visitors alike.
